Creativity is a Muscle we Must Flex.

Our Year 10 learners have been set an exciting design challenge: to develop a functional and creative storage solution that reflects an area of personal interest, or meets the needs of a specific stakeholder in their lives. This task encourages them to think critically about design problems and apply practical solutions that balance form, function, and innovation.

Once again, the Department has been incredibly impressed with the students’ originality, attention to detail, and commitment throughout the design and development process. Learners are demonstrating a growing understanding of design thinking, while refining their skills in a variety of manufacturing processes. They are also becoming more confident in selecting and using appropriate tools, machinery, and techniques that best align with their design intentions.

This cohort is exploring a diverse range of materials, with a primary focus on hardwoods, softwoods, and man-made boards. Through hands-on experimentation and guided learning, students are gaining valuable insight into the characteristics, applications, and sustainability of these materials. By the end of this rotation, they will have developed greater confidence in both material and process selection, and will understand the scientific and environmental reasons why softwood trees grow at a faster rate than hardwoods.
