James' Inaugural Exhibition!

Wednesday 15th October 2025

James' works have been on display in the ELC this week as part of his Higher Level IB Art exhibition.

Painter, sculptor and photographer James Lawson (Y13) has been hard at work on his artworks since beginning the International Baccalaureate (IB) Art programme last year.

As part of James' final presentation for IB, his works have been on display in the Edgar Learning Centre's Friedlander Room in his first curated exhibition entitled 'Uniform.', which was opened to students, teachers, friends and family on Monday.

A total of 8 pieces are on display, all of which are connected by the theme of identity, uniformity and how people find ways to express themselves within that uniformity. The theme was originally inspired by the McGlashan uniform and students - James sees that 'we're all encouraged to look the same, but every student finds small ways to make it their own'.

Through the course of putting together the exhibition, the themes of identity James began developing expanded beyond school uniform, and into commentary on the experiences of uniformity and personal identity we all come across throughout our lives.

It was a big job to put the exhibition together, but well worth the effort. James hopes to inspire more students who are considering taking the IB Diploma to look at the depth of options on offer and consider combining Arts & Culture with their academia:

"the diploma can extend your abilities in every sphere and it's been a very worthwhile experience for developing my art"

The exhibition will be open until Monday 20th while James records his experiences and observations for his final write-up - we wish him all the best for the assessment process and a big congratulations on his first exhibition!
