Year 13 International Student, Yoko, has excelled at sports during his time at McGlashan.
Yoko has been a student at John McGlashan College since 2020. His enrolment was facilitated by his father, a high-level rugby coach in Japan, through professional connections within New Zealand rugby.
Throughout his time at the college, Yoko has demonstrated a consistent interest and aptitude for competitive sports. Most notably, Yoko represented the school in the Otago Senior Volleyball Championships, where the team secured a tournament victory. His individual performance led to his selection for the tournament team, which recognises the top ten players in the Otago region.
This success allowed the team to travel to the North Island for the New Zealand Secondary School Volleyball Championships. This year marked a significant milestone as the college competed in Division 1 for the first time, eventually placing in the top 32 out of a field of over 200 teams!
In addition to his athletic contributions, Yoko and other senior players have been involved in mentoring younger members of the squad. Alongside his volleyball commitments, he is also a member of the 1st XV rugby squad.
As a Year 13 student, Yoko will conclude his time at John McGlashan College at the end of the year, with plans to return to Japan to begin his university studies.
