The international students from John McGlashan College joined over 200 fellow students from across Dunedin’s secondary schools for the 2026 International Secondary Students Welcome.
This annual event is hosted by Enterprise Dunedin on behalf of the Dunedin City Council, and serves as an official introduction to the region and its local heritage.
The welcome took place at Puketeraki Marae in Karitane, where students were received with a traditional pōwhiri and hongi harirū. This formal process offered the students a direct experience of Māori protocol and the significance of the marae as a cultural hub. Following the ceremony, Dunedin City Councillor Christine Garey delivered an official address, formally welcoming the international cohort to the city and acknowledging their contribution to the local community.
The morning concluded with a shared morning tea, providing an opportunity for our students to connect with those from other schools in an informal setting. This visit was a significant way for our international students to begin their year, fostering a sense of belonging and cultural understanding within the Otago region.
