Raising the bar - 2019 Scholars

Sunday 23rd February 2020

With the college's top academic accolades now being based on Excellence course endorsements, how did we fare with our 2019 results?

Students gaining 50 or more Excellence credits are awarded an Excellence endorsed certificate by NZQA.  This is a significant achievement and rightly acknowledged but with a third of all Level 1 JMC students consistently gaining this, we felt McGlashan needed to set a higher bar for awarding our scholar's ties or entry to the 100 or 200 Club.

From last year we decided that to be awarded a scholars tie, a student must gain a minimum of 3 Excellence course endorsements (ie minimum of 14 Ex credits which must include external standards) in each subject.  This puts the emphasis on students being 'experts' in at least half of their subjects and refocuses attention on the more rigorous external standards.  For 100 or 200 Club, students needed to gain at least 4 Excellence course endorsements.

This has resulted in fewer ties awarded overall (as expected), but interestingly a lift in the numbers reaching the higher requirements of the 100 Club.

The recipients of out top awards at Levels 1 & 2 are:
