"Spotlight on the Curriculum" Drawing our Attention to our Whakapapa & Values

How does symbolism portray meaning and purpose?

What better way is there than to introduce concepts like Whakapapa (mapping our school history and our journey) and symbolism?

Last week, Glen Clark took his Year 10 Visual Art class out to our House Walk to talk about the heraldry, symbolism and therefore values of the people whom our four houses are named after. These same values are aligned within our school values of Excellence, Respect and Manaakitanga.

Sun Tzu in the Book, The Art of War, views flags, banners, and drums not as mere decoration, but as the "eyes and ears" of the community members. In a time before radio communication, these symbols were the primary medium used to give direction to and bring together a community.

This classroom learning activity is bringing to life our collective understanding of what we are about as a school and where we are going in the future.

The house walk is situated along the windows of the technology room in the school quad. You are welcome to come check it out.
