Digital solutions for our endangered species

Friday 2nd June 2023

Year 8 students were recently given an in-depth look at the Orokonui Ecosanctuary and were presented with the challenge of finding a digital solution to nature's problems.

Over two days, the Orokonui Ecosanctuary in collaboration with ImpactEd and Amazon Web Services hosted around 8 schools from the Dunedin region to provide them with a close up and in-depth look at the Ecosanctuary and the challenges our native and endemic species face.

The school groups, consisting of eight students each, were then given the challenge of using digital solutions to help support and save our most vulnerable species such as the kākā, kākapo and kiwi.

Each group then pitched their digital solution in competition with each other.  One of our two groups took out the top spot with their game 'Kākā Rescue', a fun game idea, designed to raise awareness of the everyday challenges our native birds face due to the introduction of pests and loss of habitat. Well done to our winning team, Jonty Thomson, Archie McDonald, Henry Johnson and Toby Spalding and many thanks to our hosts at the Ecosanctuary.
