A Special Visit to Te Rūnaka o Ōtākou

Thursday 13th March 2025

Yesterday, a stunning Dunedin day, over 200 international students from over 20 countries and 10 Dunedin secondary schools gathered at Te Rūnaka o Ōtākou for a memorable experience of connection and learning.

We were warmly welcomed by members of the Rūnaka in a moving pōwhiri, setting the tone for a day of whakawhanaungatanga (building relationships).

Dunedin Mayor Jules Radich addressed the gathering, alongside representatives from SEIBA, Study Dunedin, the University of Otago, and Otago Polytechnic. Their presence highlighted the strong community ties that support our students in their educational journeys.

Throughout the day, students had the opportunity to engage with one another, forming new friendships across schools. The visit provided a deeper appreciation for the history and significance of Ōtākou Marae, reinforcing the importance of cultural connections in our diverse city.

As we departed, there was a shared sense of gratitude for the manaakitanga (hospitality) we received and the bonds we strengthened. The experience will be remembered as a special opportunity to learn, connect, and celebrate the spirit of Dunedin together.
