Check out everything from Improv & Film Comps to Music Month, Rockquest, Choir & Pipe Drumming.

There's a truckload of awesome arts opportunities coming up in Term 2 and now is the perfect time for students to think about putting themselves out there and signing up for something new.

Mr Claman is available to help with questions and sign-ups any of the below, so come and have a chat or email artscoordinator@mcglashan.school.nz - don't be shy!

JMC Improv Club + Otago Secondary Schools' Improv Club

The JMC improv club will be back in Term 2. The club meets each Tuesday lunchtime to practice improvised theatre, using classic games like 'New Choice' and 'The Machine' - it's great fun to be a part of and a great boost for your confidence, humour and public speaking skills.

For those keen to take their improv skills to the next level and meet students from other schools who are getting into it - you can also sign up for the Otago Secondary Schools' Improv Club on Wednesdays after school in Terms 2 & 3.

Make sure to chat with Ms Fridd if you're interested.

Pipe Drumming

Our Pipe Band is on the rise and in particular we are looking for students to pick up the drums in Term 2 and back up our growing team of pipers with some rhythm! The band is a great way to get a slice of Scotland - you can get involved in all sorts of ceremonies (Haggis!) and events, join clubs and bands and take your playing to national competitions and even overseas.

Contact Mr Claman today if you're keen!

Rockquest

Aotearoa's only nationwide, live, original music, youth event! The competition is a great opportunity to perform your original music live on the big stage to a packed auditorium of friends and whānau.

Registrations are open for bands now, with the Otago regional heat taking place on 10 May.

Make sure to chat to Mr McNulty if you are keen to register your band and get practicing over the holidays!

New Zealand Music Month

We're looking forward to holding our annual music month celebrations again with a series of Friday lunchtime concerts in May. The first concert will be in Week 1 of Term 2 - so it's a great time to get practicing for a performance over the holidays.

We're keen to celebrate as many different types of music as possible, so whether you're into punk or piping have a chat with Mr McNulty about getting on the bill.

Choir

Will be restarting in Term 2 - we're looking forward to getting our budding vocalists singing together in perfect harmony!

If you're keen to sign up for weekly practices, chat with Mr Claman or Mr McNulty about joining the group.

Film Competitions

As we come to the holidays, it's a great time to think about getting a team together and making plans to enter the awesome film competitions coming up in Terms 2 & 3.

New Zealand Youth Film Festival - open to senior students (anyone aged 15-24), this Festival invites you to enter any type of short film, animation, documentary or music video up to 20 minutes in length. Entries are due 1st August 2025.

OnScreen - this national short film challenge is open to all students from year 7-13, and is free to enter. You can make a short film, animation, documentary or music video - with a prize pool worth over $12,000.00!

Even better - if you register now, you can get free access to filmmaking tools, workshops and mentoring throughout Term 2 and 3. Films are due at the end of Term 3 (17th September).

48Hours - not for the faint of heart, this national competition invites you to write, shoot, edit and produce a short film from scratch within one 48 hour weekend! Over 500 teams of filmmakers enter each year with a given genre and some random elements. Filmmakers compete for awards and the title of Grand National Champion, culminating in a Grand Final event.

The shoot weekend this year is 15-17 August - we'll send out a reminder when registrations open in June.

Please email artscoordinator@mcglashan.school.nz if you have any questions.
