Digital resources to enhance learning

Tuesday 11th June 2024

The ebook and audiobook collections provided by the library support a wide range of learning styles and reading abilities. This term we have been actively promoting these resources, to assist with in-class reading assignments and to enhance reading for pleasure.

There are three ways that students can access our ePlatform ebooks and audiobooks:

  1. Search for an ebook or audiobook in our library web app, and click through to borrow the title and then begin reading or listening. Students might like to browse the lists of new and recommended ebook and audiobook titles if they would like some suggestions.

  2. Go directly to our ePlatform library, and browse or search for an ebook or audiobook to borrow. Students log in to ePlatform with their usual school login details.

  3. Students can download the free ePlatform app from the App Store or Google Play. Next, search for and select John McGlashan College Library and then log in with their usual school login details. They are then all set to find an ebook or audiobook and start reading or listening.

Once a title has been borrowed, there are various settings that can be configured to suit individual reading or listening preferences.

In audiobooks, students can modify the speed the book is played at and can navigate backwards and forwards through the book.

In ebooks, students can select coloured backgrounds, font types and sizes that suit them best. There is also an immersive reader feature which will 'read' the ebook aloud while highlighting the word being read, allow playback of individual words, and even a picture dictionary to help unlock meaning of individual words. The immersive reader also has a translation feature, to translate the ebook into a wide variety of other languages.

We have a quick guide to using these settings, and this is also available on our web app should students need a quick refresher. And of course our library team are very happy to help if anyone gets a bit stuck.
