Over the last few weeks the Year 11 and Year 12 Physical Education classes have been busy in the outdoors completing their final NCEA assessments for the year.

The two Year 11 Physical Education classes have been completing a series of mountain bike rides around the school and local trails.

These rides are linked to their final external assessment, where students must reflect on how physical activity influences their hauora/wellbeing. The rides took place in a variety of weather conditions and track surfaces — from mostly dry to very muddy!

Overall, the boys enjoyed the experience and challenged themselves in our local environment. The rides provided an excellent opportunity for them to appreciate and reflect upon the many benefits to their hauora and overall wellbeing. We are grateful to Mr Brown, Mr Cuthbert, and Mr Clark for their support and assistance during the rides around the Wakari Creek tracks.

The Year 12 classes have also been enjoying outdoor adventures, completing a practical rock climbing risk management unit. Beginning with several introductory climbing sessions at the Logan Park High School climbing wall, the students then progressed to a full day at Long Beach to test their skills on real rock.

Conditions were more than a little windy on the day, but the boys persevered and completed a range of climbs, pushing themselves both physically and mentally. Rock climbing provides an excellent opportunity for teamwork, as students must rely entirely on one another for their safety. Learning correct belaying techniques, using proper climbing calls, and caring for the equipment were all key elements of their risk management practice. It was a fantastic experience to be out in such a spectacular location enjoying the challenge of climbing.
