Year 7 & 8 field trip a great success.

This term the year 7 and 8 Te reo Maori classes were able to visit Puketeraki Marae at Karitane. The trip was to expand the boys' understanding of Maori culture and to support classroom learning. Students were welcomed with a traditional Powhiri.

The boys experienced a guided tour around the Pa site (Te Pa a Te Wera) hearing stories and history of the Waitaha, then Ngāti Māmoe; later Ngāi Tahu. The boys were then able to take part in Mau rakau (Taiaha based training), weaving harakeke, and traditional Maori games. We also looked at the carvings and stories of the Puketeraki Marae.

The trip was a great success and I look forward to the second trip later next term for the other year 7 and 8 classes.
