In our most recent assembly, Max Porter asked students to reflect on the importance of this special day.

Kia ora koutou katoa. I tēnei Rāpare, i te rā o Mātariki. He aha a Mātariki? Ko Mātariki te whakahari o te tau hou a Māori. Engāri, he hirahira a Mātariki ki ngā tangata o Aotearoa. Ka manatu tatou ngā tangata mate ai, ka whakahari tatou te pahore o te tau, ā, ka whakaaro tatou ki ngā tōna wā. Kaua e wareware a Mātariki i ngā whētu; Mātariki mai, Ururangi mai, Waipuna-ā-rangi mai, Waitī mai, Waitā mai, Tupu-ā-nuku mai, Tupu-ā-rangi mai, Hiwa-i-te-rangi mai, Pōhutakawa mai.

Boys, this coming Thursday is Matariki. This is a time for regathering, remembering, and new goals, but more importantly, to strengthen and honour the brotherhood of the college. To come together, not just to celebrate the new year, but the new begginings and oppurtunites we have. It is a huge priveledge to attend John Mcglashan, so its important to honor the mana the oppurtunity you have been given. Take every new day with a step of confidence and responsibility, and make the most of your time here.
