One of our visiting old boys demonstrates that essential skills learned through the performing arts can open doors to diverse opportunities on a national level.
Old Boy, Tama Alexander, recently visited the Year 13 Drama class and our JMC Improv Club. Tama is currently one of New Zealand's youngest professional comedians performing on the national comedy circuit and is based out of Ōtautahi Christchurch.
During his visit, Tama shared insights into the world of comedy (both writing and performing), inspiring students to explore the art of humour and improvisation. His experience as a professional comedian provided valuable lessons and perspectives on writing comedy, engaging audiences and crafting comedic routines.
Our ākonga had the opportunity to learn about the importance of timing, delivery, and creativity in comedy. His visit served as a platform for students to gain a deeper understanding of the entertainment industry, as well as kōrero about the drama process of devising (which the Year 13 class is currently in the midst of).
Tama's presence in our Year 13 Drama classroom and JMC Improv Club brought a real-world relevance to the students' educational experiences. His journey as a young comedian totally resonated with our aspiring performers, highlighting the possibilities within the performing arts.
Engaging in the arts at school helps to develop essential skills as well as opening doors to exciting opportunities beyond graduation. This is something that both Tama and another successful alumnus and professional comedian, James Mustapic, have shown. By immersing yourself in artistic pursuits at school, you can develop creativity, critical thinking, and communication skills that are highly valued in many professions. Exploring the arts allows you to express yourself, develop confidence, think outside the box, and collaborate with others - fostering personal growth and opening doors to a range of diverse opportunities. Whether it's through drama, music, visual arts, or literature, embracing the arts can enrich your educational experience and set the stage for a bright and fulfilling future.
It is always a real pleasure to have our talented old-boys visit school and we look forward to seeing Tama again soon when he's next in town.
