Kia ora koutou,

You may have seen the recent announcement from the Government regarding significant proposed changes to NCEA, including the introduction of two new national qualifications – the New Zealand Certificate of Education (NZCE) and the New Zealand Advanced Certificate of Education (NZACE). Attached is a fact sheet from the Ministry of Education outlining the proposal and inviting feedback from families as part of a national consultation process.

While these proposed changes are wide-reaching, it’s important to emphasise that they are still at the consultation stage, and any changes would not affect students currently in Years 9–13. Students currently working towards NCEA will continue with the existing framework, and our school remains fully committed to delivering strong, coherent learning programmes under the current system.

At John McGlashan College, we offer a range of qualification pathways including NCEA Levels 1–3, the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP), Agribusiness, and Gateway. We continue to see strong levels of success across all pathways, and we believe that the learning that takes place in Year 11 – whether through NCEA Level 1 or as preparation for the IBDP – provides a vital foundation for senior learning.

Our staff are highly experienced and actively involved in delivering high-quality programmes across all qualification pathways. We are proud of the opportunities our students have and the outcomes they achieve.

We will continue to offer robust NCEA courses until any new model of assessment is implemented. During this time, we will also continue to review, refine, and strengthen these courses to ensure they best serve our learners.

As students begin to select their subjects for next year, they can do so with the confidence that we are committed to ensuring both the teaching and assessment across all pathways is of the highest standard. Please follow this link to view information about our course pathways: https://sites.google.com/mcglashan.school.nz/courseoutline2025/home

We encourage parents and caregivers to engage with the Ministry of Education’s consultation process. This is a significant moment in shaping the future of secondary education in New Zealand, and it’s important that a wide range of voices and perspectives are heard. Your feedback will help ensure that any future changes reflect the needs and aspirations of our learners, whānau, and school communities.

Please read the attached information from the Ministry of Education for more details. We will continue to keep you informed as more information becomes available.

Ngā mihi nui,
Nigel Hunter
