Sculpture on Display in the ELC

Friday 19th September 2025

There are some amazing sculptures being exhibited in the ELC by our Year 1 IB Students.

The college has had a wonderful year so far in Visual Arts, with our regular photography exhibitions attracting large cohorts of students who've been impressing the student body and community with their talent.

Something lesser known is that we also cater for specialist artists through our International Baccalaureate (IB) Arts programme - and over the last couple of years a few students have decided to pick up the mysterious medium of sculpture, including James Lawson, who is now in Year 2 IB and set to display a variety of works in his exhibition later this year. His original Oamaru stone sculpture is already on display in the ELC Foyer, which is fast becoming a home for art at the college thanks to our amazing library staff!

Last week two new sculptors - Raiden and Tee - have joined the ranks with their first pieces from Year 1 IB now on display. Read on below to see pictures of their artworks and hear about the inspiration behind their works:

Raiden

Raiden has been working on these sculptures for the majority of his first year of his IB Diploma. His understanding of a range of tactile skills and materials is evidently displayed on these works, which are currently on display in the ELC.

Raiden’s overall message through his works is to portray the evolution and development of the ‘Mecha’ genre across CGI, interactive entertainment, as well as aspects of the film industry.

Pictured above is Tee alongside his latest work - its’ meaning tells the long story of his family tree; more specifically his roots.

This sculpture was sewn together with woollen blankets, a key aspect that holds great significance in his story, and is stapled to a wooden frame.

A special thank you to Year 13 Prefect Jonny Leitch for capturing these works beautifully with his camera.

Make sure to pop in to the ELC to view these works in person - the library is open after school each day!
