Grayson Westgate, Max Kirkwood, Saul Mawhinney and Oscar Grey recently competed in the Otago Primary and Intermediate School Cross- Country event.
As in recent years, the event was held at Kaikorai Valley College and Year 7 and Year 8s completed a 2.4km course. Our Year 8 competitors had travelled home a day early from the school camp in Queenstown to take part in the event.
Grayson Westgate went out strongly and was leading the field at the half-way point. Unfortunately however, Grayson fell after slipping on a root in the downhill forest section of the course. He picked himself up quickly and worked his way back to the leaders. The top three were all close as they returned to the fields with approximately 600m to go. However, Oliver Colloty from Balmacewen proved to strong and quickly picked up the pace opening up an unassailable gap. Grayson worked hard to pull away from the third person and finished a credible second place in a time of 8mins 26sec (18 seconds behind Oliver). Max Kirkwood also had a strong run and finished in tenth place in 8mins 54secs.
