Year 12 & 13 Standard Drinks Workshop – John McGlashan College, 29th July 2025
John McGlashan College is committed to the wellbeing of all students. JMC engaged with Tūturu to provide curriculum materials, professional learning development, expertise, and support on wellbeing.
In 2024, JMC ran a Standard Drinks Workshop with Tūturu and NZ Police, a series of activities and lessons to provide harm minimisation information for senior students prior to the school formal and after party.
This year, as well as running another Standard Drinks Workshop, school is expanding harm minimisation learning and conversations to include sports coaches and whānau/family.
Young people are at the riskiest and highest level of of hazardous drinking on leaving secondary school. The NZ Health Survey (2023/2024) showed that 22.6% of those aged 18-24 years had the highest prevalence of hazardous drinking in NZ (this has declined from 35.8% in 2021/2022).
Research is clear that alcohol is the drug that causes the most harm in Aotearoa NZ. It is important to provide young people with opportunities to engage with evidence developing their critical thinking skills around alcohol.
The workshop does not condone or judge alcohol use, but introduces information and strategies to reduce the harm that can be caused by alcohol, with a focus on looking after themselves and their friends.
