Year 13 student continues John McGlashan's run of sporting the silver fern for Ice Hockey at the U18 World Champs
After the success of the U20 New Zealand team featuring three McGlashan Old Boys, Will Bary, a current Year 13, travelled to Turkey in early March to compete in the Under 18 Division III Group A World Championships for Ice Hockey.
Will worked hard last year, representing the school for Ice Hockey, and making strides at Under 18 Regional Rep level hockey. This led to his inclusion in the wider training squad for the Phoenix Thunder Men's team, his selection to the Under 18 New Zealand squad, and regularly embarrassing teachers Mr. Schumacher and Mr. Wesseling in the local Dunedin ice Hockey League with his youth, speed and agility. As he has grown, Will has transitioned into an effective puck carrier, who can slip through the toughest defences and get a shot off from anywhere.
The U18 national team came up against very tough competition, playing against nations like Mexico, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Iceland, Turkey and powerhouse Belgium. Opening against Mexico proved tough, with a 5-2 loss, but the squad rebounded with a strong victory over Bosnia and Herz., winning 7-2. That would prove the only taste of victory as Iceland, Turkey and Belgium all showed their class and ability to score well. A highlight would be how New Zealand held their own against the impressive and undefeated Belgium, only going down 7-4 after a hard-fought battle.
Will contributed in all areas, finishing the tournament with a +1 statistic (a measurement of player success using the amount of goals you were on the ice for, subtracted by the amount goals conceded which you were on the ice for). Adding a goal in an international tournament was an excellent milestone as well.
Will will continue to grow as a player, and will be a senior leader in John McGlashan's attempt to defend the South Island Secondary Schools title later this year.
