We've had the pleasure of hosting students from Aurora College and Waiau Area School, both of whom made fantastic use of our outdoor facilities.
The orienteering course has proven to be a real favourite among students, with friendly competition pushing times lower and spirits higher. It’s always exciting to see young people engaging with the outdoors, challenging themselves, and building confidence in a fun, supportive environment.
In a promising development for both our students and the wider community, members of the Te Anau Disc Golf Club visited to assess our site for a potential new disc golf course. If all goes ahead, this will not only provide a great recreational outlet for McGlashan students and neighbouring schools, but could also serve as a venue for tournaments—bringing in both visitors and income. This project represents a step toward sustainable growth, combining sport, community, and opportunity.
Recently we purchased some new camping equipment. The upgraded gear will help make overnight trips more comfortable and enjoyable, allowing students to focus on the experience without the distraction of worn-out kit.
The shed intended to be located where the cabin is currently sitting has been delayed, and we’re actively exploring other options to ensure essential gear—including kayaks, our boat, and ODE equipment—is properly protected from the elements. While frustrating, it’s a challenge we’re tackling head-on to ensure our facilities remain functional and well-maintained.
My family and I recently attended a community planting day led by Te Kōawa Tūroa o Takitimu. As part of the day, we were gifted 50 native plants, which will soon find a home at the lodge. These will be planted by students, helping to enrich the landscape while strengthening our connection to the local community and environment.
Finally, in a move toward operational excellence, we hosted Greg from Qualworks, who conducted a two-day review of our systems. His insights will be instrumental as we continue to refine our processes, ensuring the lodge evolves with purpose and remains a high-quality learning environment.
All in all, it's been a week of growth, reflection, and forward momentum. Whether through new experiences, environmental initiatives, or strategic planning, we’re excited about the journey ahead and grateful for the many hands—young and old—helping to shape our shared vision.
