Mahuru Music from Sogg, Soul Side & More!

Sunday 22nd September 2024

The boys have been making waves with performances across town, with Soul Side releasing their debut album.

As we come to the end of term 3, it's been amazing to see the hard work in the practice room coming to fruition for our young musicians as they've been turning heads with public performances across Dunedin!

There's some great platforms being created for young musicians in Dunedin at the moment - one of which was the Dunedin Youth Council's SoundWave Festival at the end of August. The sold out all-ages event at Errick's hosted 16 youth bands from around Dunedin including Johnnie's Bands Marmalade and Soul Side, with our own Emilio Ghosh-Novero as master of ceremonies.

Thanks so much to the DYC, Errick's, and the team at the DCC for bringing us another excellent youth initiative.

Not to be outdone, on that front - the Amped project has been operating in full tilt this month, running all-ages public gigs at Te Whare o Rukutia and Pearl Diver.

There was another strong helping of McGlashan talent at Te Whare o Rukutia, with Sogg and Soul Side putting on some powerful performances for their peers.

Check out Sogg's performance at Amped here. Ollie Kemmett (Vocals, Guitar), Leo Hill (Bass) and Reuben Tulloch (Drums) were full to the brim with raw energy - it's great to see the boys and their peers able to cut loose in a safe space made for youth! Thanks very much to Matt Tulloch for recording this one, and to Craig and the team at Amped for all their mahi getting the boys on stage.

Each Amped gig also hosts a professional band - and I couldn't help but notice McGlashan alumni Alex Burchell laying down some incredible drumming for his band Robots in Love, which seemed a fitting way to back up our current students!

Alex hasn't ever stopped drumming - I don't think he knows how! These days you can catch him with Robots In Love, Pretty Trippy and Techno-Logique, as well as the Dunedin Musician's Club and Dunedin Symphony Orchestra.

You'll notice Soul Side have been very active and there's a good reason - their debut album has been released this month. It's hard to believe these year 10 boys have already crossed that huge milestone off the list!

The album by Leo Hill (Vocals, Rhythm Guitar), Adam Ludgate (Lead Guitar), Chris Body (Bass, Backing Vocals) and Jamie Bradfield (Drums) is a strong debut full of catchy vocals and guitar melodies with a clever mix of grunge and indie sensibility, which feels both familiar and new all at once. Beautifully recorded and mixed in our own music department by the multi-talented Mr McNulty.

I can't recommend giving this one a listen enough. Check it out here:

And for anyone who loves a good interview, have a listen to Leo shooting the breeze on Dunedin's own Radio One.

And finally, to cap off the month it was wonderful to have a full showing of McGlashan Muso's for the annual fete. Thanks very much to everyone who came to support John McGlashan, and of course the PFA for organising the event - it was another great opportunity to get the boys performing to the public and we all had a lot of fun putting on the music on the day.
