Welcome to this week's edition of the John McGlashan Pilkington Press.
Tēnā koutou,
This week, the big news comes from our JMC theatre group, who won the SGCNZ Otago Regional Shakespeare Festival with their 15-minute performance of The Taming of the Shrew, reimagined with a fun Barbie theme. We couldn’t be prouder of our boys. Scroll down to learn more about their outstanding efforts and how they’re now preparing for the National Finals in Wellington.
Both our Year 8 Camp and German Curriculum Camp groups returned safely last Friday afternoon after an active and exciting week. We hope they enjoyed a well-deserved rest over the weekend.
Meanwhile, a group of boys headed out to the Greenstone region last Friday to complete their Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award, alongside others working towards their Gold and Bronze awards. On Sunday, yet another group left for their Senior Geography Camp at Te Kūwaha Mātauraka.
This week, our Easter and ANZAC services went smoothly, with the boys showing great respect for both significant occasions. The boys are now brilliant in remembering our new ‘white shirt Wednesdays’ policy now.
We hope that many of our parents were able to gather valuable insights about their son’s progress during the Parent Interviews held yesterday and today. We trust that these discussions, particularly around the new progress reports, were informative and helpful.
In the Arts, there are even more opportunities for our boys to get involved. We have our first drummer signed up for the new Pipe Band and are eager to welcome more. Music registrations for Rockquest and Bandquest are now open, and our Kapa Haka group continues to rehearse for Te Hautonga in June. There’s still time for new members to join and get ready for Polyfest in August. We had an impressive 78 student photos entered in our photography exhibition which has been on display in the ELC this week.
Finally, we were deeply saddened to hear of the passing of former Headmaster, Mr Allan Paulin, earlier this week. Mr Paulin served as the 8th Headmaster of John McGlashan College from 1978 to 1995, and his leadership left a lasting impact on the school community.
As we head into the school holidays, we wish all of our boys a restful break and look forward to an action-packed Term 2.
Kā mihi,
John Veitch
Acting Principal
