Alumni News: Red Dot Award Success

Thursday 20th November 2025

Old Collegian Will Duffy and his Massey University classmates have been awarded Best of the Best at the international Red Dot Awards for their lamp design 'Lune'.

Words by Will Duffy:

Lune is a lamp that was created as a third-year class-wide paper in 2023 at Massey University, where 25 of us were tasked with designing a task lamp and then producing 25 units each, simulating the considerations involved in mass production.

A bit about Lune: Lune’s light source, housed between two discs, casts a band of light across the room. The aluminium spun discs can be pinched together, directing light. A rotational dimmer control sits atop the stem, enabling control of the light intensity, while a hinge allows the discs to tilt backwards to accommodate a range of lighting positions.

Lune aimed to be a transformative experience, allowing users to compose a purposeful and expansive light quality, as well as the ability to affect mood and orchestrate a spatial experience through ambient lighting. (if you don’t want to include this, the descriptions are on the pages I have linked.)

In 2024, we entered the lamp into the New Zealand Best Awards, where it received a Gold Award. This year, we submitted it to the Red Dot Awards, an international design competition covering product design, communication design, and design concepts. We were honoured with winning a Best of the Best award, which is the highest achievement possible, with only around 1.2% of all applicants receiving one.

The awards night was held in Singapore, and two of my classmates and I were lucky enough to travel there for the event. It was an unreal night, celebrating, connecting with others, and meeting new people.
