Ever wondered what it's like to have a workplace that's a little out of this world?
It may sound like a distant dream, but for me, it became a reality thanks to Air New Zealand's "Dream Seat" campaign.
I was one of over 100 participants chosen to explain my career dream to Air New Zealand. If selected, the airline sends you to a chosen location to get closer to your ambition. There are many well-known New Zealanders, including Dame Valarie Adams, Shaun Johnson, Josh Emett, Ryan Fox, Simran Kaur and Tom Sainsbury, who are all Dream Seat Ambassadors.
I dreamt of flying the friendly skies with the amazing crew at Air New Zealand. My journey began with a great sense of excitement. I was greeted by the fantastic ground crew at Dunedin Airport. With a rumble of the engines, the plane thundered down the runway, its nose lifting as we soared into the air. What I love most about flying is the incredible people and the values at Air NZ: a can-do attitude, being yourself, welcoming everyone as a friend, and lastly, sharing your Aotearoa.
In no time, we were descending through the clouds into sunny and welcoming Auckland. The extremely knowledgeable Ashleigh, who oversees all flight attendant applications, took me to see the Academy of Learning, where I met Susan and Liz, the training gurus. As the team showed me around the different parts of the training facility, I saw many interesting and cool things. I proudly wore the uniform of my dream job, exploring the history behind this instantly recognisable uniform while also discovering how friendly and happy everyone who works at Air New Zealand is.
Air New Zealand offers many different career opportunities. You can be anything you want to be: a flight attendant, pilot, engineer, ground crew member, maintenance crew member, digital team member, flight scheduler, or part of customer service. This iconic company has multiple avenues to explore to become the best you can be, whether soaring high in the sky or staying firmly on the ground. If you are determined and have a positive attitude, this career path can take you anywhere you want to go. Being part of this whānau for a while was a truly memorable experience that I will carry forward with me. I encourage anybody contemplating their future to consider this option.
Flying back to Dunedin was bittersweet. I had to say a sad farewell to the fabulous people I met along the way. I loved my time and experiences. I was happy to be back in the air, dreaming of future journeys with Air New Zealand.
