A Reflection on 2024 for Years 7 & 8 at John McGlashan College

As the year draws to a close, it’s time to reflect on an incredible journey for our Year 7 and 8 students at John McGlashan College. From the moment our Year 7 boys walked through the gates for their first day, to our Year 8 boys preparing to step up into Year 9, this year has been packed with growth, challenges, and outstanding achievements.

For our Year 7 students, 2024 has been a year of firsts—first experiences of college life, first school camps, and first opportunities to truly test themselves in academic, cultural, and sporting arenas. It has been incredible to witness how quickly they have embraced the McGlashan spirit, showing resilience, curiosity, and a willingness to get involved. They’ve settled into the rhythm of school life and excelled in many areas, setting a strong foundation for their future.

Our Year 8 students, now seasoned members of the Junior School, have continued to lead by example. Their involvement in activities such as the Prepared Reading and Prepared Speeches competitions showcased their growing confidence and communication skills. Whether delivering compelling arguments or captivating audiences with their expressive reading, their performances demonstrated poise and preparation.

On the sports field, both Year 7 and 8 students brought their energy and enthusiasm to events like Athletics Day and Swimming Sports. The camaraderie, house spirit, and sheer determination were evident in every race, jump, and throw. Our teams shone brightly during the Waihi and Balmacewen sports exchanges, where our boys showcased not just their talent but their sportsmanship and teamwork, earning respect from their peers and competitors alike.

School camps at Te Anau were undoubtedly a highlight of the year, offering students the chance to step outside their comfort zones, immerse themselves in nature, and form lifelong memories with their classmates. Whether hiking, kayaking, or collaborating on team challenges, the boys demonstrated grit, teamwork, and a sense of adventure that will serve them well in the years to come.

Cultural pursuits were equally vibrant this year. The School Haka and Singing competitions were electric, with students bringing passion and pride to the stage. The unity displayed during these performances reminded us all of the strength of our McGlashan community. Likewise, the Headway and Headstart exhibitions provided students with a platform to showcase their innovative thinking and creativity, with parents and staff alike marvelling at the range and depth of the projects presented.

To our Year 8 students: as you prepare to move into Year 9, take with you the lessons you’ve learned, the friendships you’ve built, and the courage you’ve shown. You’ve been outstanding role models for our younger students, and we are excited to see the incredible things you will achieve in senior school.

To our Year 7 boys: you’ve made an impressive start to your McGlashan journey. We can’t wait to see what you’ll accomplish as you step into Year 8 and continue to grow as individuals and as part of this vibrant community.

Finally, a heartfelt thank you to all the parents, caregivers, and staff who have supported the boys throughout the year. Your dedication and encouragement have been invaluable in making 2024 such a successful and memorable year for everyone.

Here’s to a well-deserved holiday break and another year of growth, learning, and excellence ahead in 2025!

Ngā mihi nui,
