This is an exciting cultural/leadership expedition for students.

Dear Parents, Caregivers and students,

We’re excited to offer senior John McGlashan students a life-changing opportunity to explore Borneo in 2025!

13 nights exploring through Borneo on a leadership challenge!

Students who will be Year 11, 12 and 13 in 2025 are invited to join us on this once-in-a-lifetime cultural adventure expedition. We hope that they have already talked to you about the presentation they have attended at school about the itinerary.

We focus on this being student-led, therefore as a team, students take responsibility for budgeting, transport, where to eat, activities and communicating with locals.

We promote learning skills for life on this trip:

  • Leadership skills

  • Independence

  • Problem-solving skills

  • Confidence to tackle challenges

  • Resilience

  • Teamwork

  • Caring for selves, others and nature

  • Giving back to communities in need

We are partnering with World Challenge to offer this trip. World Challenge is a reputable, well-established and experienced company offering students life-changing cultural trips to off-the-beaten-path destinations around the world. This is an opportunity for students to challenge themselves and go out of their comfort zone, whilst enjoying all the beauty these three countries have to offer.

Borneo is the third largest island in the world. It is shared between three countries: Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei. The Malaysian part of Borneo is called East Malaysia. It consists of Malaysia's two largest states, Sabah and Sarawak.

Some of the activities the boys will be enjoying are:

  • Exploring Semenggoh and Kuching

  • Visiting orangutans

  • Embracing the culture of a remote community volunteering at a marine conservation site

  • Immersing themselves in jungle trekking and learning survival skills

Previous students have had this to say: “It gave me so much confidence to know I have the skills, initiative and resilience to travel in a foreign country, work as a team and to be completely out of my comfort zone..”

We invite you to come along to join a 45-minute presentation from Troy Greenem from World Challenge (accompanied by Ella Murdoch from John McGlashan College). This will be held online on June 20th at 7 pm to go through the itinerary and answer all your questions.

Please click for ‘Register for information session’ on the following webpage to RSVP.

The individual cost to parents is estimated to be around $8,200 NZD per person. Please note that this is an estimated cost only and expenses will be spoken about in more detail during the Information Evening presentation.

Parents may like to encourage their child to contribute to the cost of this opportunity by fundraising or by gaining some part-time work throughout the year or during the Christmas holidays.
