Year 12 and 13 boys got to see and understand the realities of road crashes in the Otago area recently.
Road engineer, Jeremy Byfield, presented to the group the causes of many of the crashes that he has to investigate throughout Otago and Southland. Many factors were highlighted such as low vehicle safety ratings, passengers not wearing seat belts, alcohol, and drivers not experienced enough and being distracted. Key take home messages were:
- let the driver drive.
- wear a seatbelt.
- if you don't trust the driver and what they are doing in a vehicle, come up with an excuse to get out e.g. "I am about to be sick".
