Sincerest thanks to everyone who has been a part of the college in this wonderful centenary year.

The school year is almost over and I want to extend my sincerest thanks to everyone who has been a part of the college in what has been, a wonderful centenary year. We must now take a big breath and get on with fulfilling the vision for the next era in the college’s history.

To herald the 2019 school year, we welcome a number of new staff:

  • Troy Shoebridge will teach Digitech classes while Colin Gray takes study leave for 2019.
  • David Beasley has been appointed to a Year 7 position in the Junior Department. David comes to us from Waimuku School in Auckland and I am confident that he will connect with the boys and be an asset to the college.
  • An impressive list of applicants is being interviewed this week for the replacement Sports Director.
  • Anita Veitch will take up Mary Guthrie’s part-time teaching position in Learning Support.

The 2018 Centenary Yearbook will be available to the boys on the last day of the term. It is a stylish, contemporary publication, which chronicles a special and highly impressive year of achievement and celebration in the college’s history. I wish to acknowledge Editor David Schaumann and his team for their hard work in compiling such a stunning record. Tony Gomez has also put many hours into crafting the sports section, a mammoth task at McGlashan due to our exceptionally high levels of participation.

This term has flashed by with examinations being held for all Year 9 – 13 students. From what I have witnessed, many of our boys demonstrate a very focused and determined work ethic, especially at senior level, so we are confident that they will have done very well in these high-stakes exams, both nationally and internationally.

As I write this, the Year 10s have just enjoyed another highly-acclaimed ARTS Week rating it, "The best week ever!" Some wet weather has challenged the Year 10 camps at Ohau and Twizel, but boys and staff have coped well and even revelled in the experience.

By the time we return in Term 1, the Food Technology room, multi-use sports surface, No. 1 changing room and Junior Boarding House refurbishment will be complete which will bring renewed opportunities for our students. Once again, the roll is bulging for next year and places at the college continue to be highly sought-after.

Startup and Course Selection information for 2019 can be found under the Academic tab on the college website. Key dates for 2019 can also be sourced from the homepage.

I hope you are able to spend some time reconnecting with family over the holidays and, on behalf of all the staff at John McGlashan College, I wish you a very special Christmas and fabulous summer break.

Neil Garry.
