Te Whakataetae-ā-motu mō Ngā Manu Kōrero

Friday 22nd September 2023

John McGlashan students stood with others from around Ōtepoti to pōwhiri in thousands from around the nation.

On Tuesday 19th September, a group of kapa haka students took part in a region-wide pōwhiri to welcome in thousands of people from around the country for the national speech competition "Ngā Manu Kōrero". The event was hosted by Ōtākou and was run over 3 days at the Edgar Centre. This is only the second time that the national competition has been held in Dunedin with the first time being back in 2010.

In order to take part in this event, students had to learn haka, mōteatea and waiata, attend workshops, weekend rehearsals and finally audition to make the JMC team.

The boys certainly did our school proud and represented us and the region with mana. E poho kererū katoa ana tātou.

While at the pōwhiri the boys were immersed in te reo and tikanga and were able to see amazing haka and waiata and kaikōrero. It was truly special.

Big thanks to everyone that helped with transport and supporting our rangatahi to attend such a prestigious event. Ngā mihi nunui ki a koutou katoa.
