Junior Prizegiving and end-of-year Principal's message

Sunday 12th December 2021

We recently celebrated the achievements of our junior students. On this day we also farewelled six staff members and were treated to Mr Garry's end-of-year address.

A real highlight of the ceremony was listening to a song titled "Totara", written by Lochlan Ing-Aram and Daniel O'Brien, and dedicated to Rev Kelk. This song is attached below.

Principal's message-two key take-aways

Nelson Mandella once said, "there is no passion to be found by playing small and settling for a life that is less than you are capable of living". I have found that nothing in life is worthwhile unless you take a risk. So fail big. You will falter as your life progresses. The road is bumpy-accept this, there is nothing surer.

The second most important question you should ask yourself is to what degree have you given service to others?

Staff Farewell Messages

Ruth North has made a significant contribution to the development of the library over the last four years and has provided excellent support to a number of departments. Thank you Ruth for your energy and commitment to our boys and your work.

Michele Rodger has been a committed and dedicated Head of Department in years 7 and 8 for 14 years. Thank you Michele for your service to our boys and the positive impact you have made inducting our students as they arrive at the college. Your hard work has set them up for success in their future studies. Your expertise in co-curricular activities and school camps has been considerable and we wish you well for the future.

Claire Tremaine has taught junior Spanish and has looked after our ESOL boys for the second half of the year. Thank you Claire for your professionalism.

Lars Thompson has given four years of service to the college. We congratulations him on his appointment at Auckland University. This is a reflection of his teaching abilities and maths knowledge. All the best Lars, go well.

Clark Boswell has been at the college for two and a half years as a science teacher specialising in Chemistry. He has also been a dean of years 10 and 11. Clark has a new role as Head of Science at King's High School. All the very best Clark.

Rev Barry Kelk has had a 12-year connection with the college. He has been an influential member of both Boards, Board of Trustees Chair, Counselor, Chaplain and master teacher-Thank you Barry. We honour him for the positive, holistic influence he has had on the fabric and spirit of our community and on each of us personally. Barry's passion has been obvious and he has given "voice" to the special character of the college. Barry has inspired hundreds of students and staff over his time here. He has challenged all of us to consider the commitment and contribution we make to each other, and to the special character of John McGlashan College. Barry's red door has always been open. An active retirement in the hills of Bannockburn beckons.
