The winter sports season has barely finished and the 'Gilray Pitch' is already back in action.
This is quite symbolic of the way in which the Year 9 students have really engaged in everything offered to them this year. We challenge them to make the most of their opportunities and it is clear that a number of them are making sure they do.
Year 9 Prepared Reading
This took place earlier this week after preparing over the term and each student presenting to their class. Three finalists were chosen from each class and the students competed for the top prize. Ably judged by Mr Morrison and Sheon Luxmanan (who has won many speech awards himself) the boys put our judges through their paces as they were entertained by the presentations.
The awards went to:
1st: Fletcher Tilyard
2= Harry McDonald and Oliver Beadell
Highly Commended: Edward Jennings
Dean's Awards
We also presented our Dean's Awards for August. These went to:
LACHLAN RUSSELL
For his diligence and consistency. He always gets on with his work, is a Stack Attack Star, and is never too busy to lend a hand.
WILL HARREX
Will gives his all no matter where he is. He epitomises ‘intent’ that we talked about. He never shies away from a challenge, whether it’s the classroom or the hockey field!
WILL MACAULEY
Will is diligent, hardworking, focused, and doing his absolute best in all subjects. He is polite, respectful, thoughtful, and kind to all around him.
ADRIAN PRASATH
For making a mammoth contribution to the 9NSM Stack Attack. Adrian is a multi-talented helpful member of the Year Group.
Service Opportunities
Our students have taken on opportunities on the sports field and in the classroom but when asked for 'enthusiastic volunteers' for a non-specific task, I was overwhelmed by the number of boys that rushed me with offers of support.
12 boys from across the four form classes traveled down to Otago Hospice to offer service by cleaning the hospice fleet of cars. This was an afternoon of hard work, but I hear there was quite a lot of fun to be had at the same time.
Giving service is a key facet of life at McGlashan so to have so many boys keen to help out and get involved was pretty special.
Congratulations also to the boys that were selected to attend a variety of tournaments for Winter Tournament Week. It is a great experience to have as a Year 9 student and we know that you would have all learned a lot from that experience.
