Tuesday 2nd April 2024

Caleb has been selected for the NZ Youth Pipe Band and is set to perform at the Anzac ceremony during the upcoming holidays, alongside an upcoming trip to Canada.

The Youth Pipe Band, comprising young pipers and drummers, focuses on honing the skills of its members. Welcoming Caleb and six new pipers, along with a group of drummers, the band represents talented individuals from across New Zealand aged 16-23.

Piping holds significant importance in New Zealand, experiencing exponential growth over the last few decades. For Caleb, being part of the Youth Pipe Band is a significant achievement and a long-standing goal. He eagerly anticipates the challenges ahead.

Caleb's journey with piping began in Year 5 at the encouragement of his mother, who wanted him to explore his Scottish heritage. Since Year 7, he has been an active member of the John McGlashan Pipe Band, participating in school Nationals and Octagonal days. Currently, the JMC Pipe Band is looking to grow its membership and Caleb is determined to ensure this happens.

Currently, Caleb is mentoring a group of Year 7 and 8 students, guiding them towards proficiency in piping by Term 3. He recognizes the benefits of being part of a band, emphasizing its role in fostering lifelong friendships and teaching essential life skills.

John McGlashan College welcomes young band members from all schools, irrespective of gender. Caleb is enthusiastic about accepting more piping students and is supported by experienced tutors.
