Commemorations and Celebrations in the Library

Wednesday 15th May 2024

Library displays, events and promotions have made the library a busy and vibrant place during the first few weeks of term two.

Displays in the ELC foyer to commemorate ANZAC Day were accompanied by a new dashboard on the library web app, providing access to our print and digital ANZAC resources. The ANZAC dashboard includes a link to the full text of Supreme Sacrifice, a college publication that tells the stories of thirty old boys who died in combat. Reverend Roly Scott referred to this small book during the ANZAC service last term. You can also read about Fergus Begg and Lloyd Thomson, the two men profiled in this year's service, by following the links on the ANZAC dashboard.

May is New Zealand Music Month and we are celebrating with live music in the library on Fridays. The lunch time concerts feature a different McGlashan group each week. All have been fun and some have also been loud! A big thank you to the musicians, and to Mr McNulty and Mr Claman for organising such great entertainment every Friday. Visit the Music Month dashboard on our library web app to see which student bands have been performing and to find out more about New Zealand music in general.

The first week of term was Sign Language Week, and Friday 17th of May was Pink Shirt Day. Both of these national events have been promoted in the library with displays and bookmarks, and the student librarians enjoyed a special 'pink' morning tea. Pink Shirt Day aims to stop bullying by bringing people together, celebrating diversity and promoting kindness and inclusiveness. There are numerous resources in the library which support the anti-bullying message, including non-fiction resources and novels that explore these themes in a fictional setting.

And lastly, throughout term two a selection of books is on display for the Year 7 and 8 'Bookflix' Reading Challenge. It is fantastic to see so many great books being read and different genres being explored.
