Thursday 3rd March 2016

Athletics day has always been a real highlight in the school calendar.

It is very competitive between all four of the houses because they are all fighting to gain the Interhouse Athletics Trophy. Mates go head to head to contribute to their House points. The healthy rivalry between the Houses make is such a great day. Not only for the competitors but it is also a good way for all the new students at the college to interact and make new friends.

The day started off with a hiss and a roar with the standard events. All boys at the school compete in these to try qualify for the finals. Most of the boys ran as fast as a rat running in a drainpipe but there is always a few boys that have a bit much pudding the night before and don’t seem to perform as well as they wanted to!

There were records broken left, right and center with Nico Bowering in the junior 100 meter, Jonny Baker in the junior 400, Leroy Ferguson in the junior Shot put and Nathan Harrison in the 800 meter. These boys are absolute athletes.

When you aren’t competing you’re cheering your house on. All the boys were going off like a bag of cats at a grey hound meet. A highlight of the day was Liam Hickman’s 400m.  Liam isn’t known for pinning his ears back and finding the line, and just like that kid that fell out the tree, was never quite in it. However all finals were very impressive with a high standard on show; those roosters can run.

These boys took home the trophies at the end of the day after having a good all round performance:

Primary Cup - Peter Sewell

Novice Cup - Nathan Harrison

Junior Cup - Nico Bowering & Ruaidhri Brosnan

Intermediate Cup - Josh Stoddard

Senior Cup - Taylor Mechen

Sprint Cup - Peter Sewell

U16 Field Cup - Peter Sewell

Senior Field Cup - Taylor Mechen

Mile Cup - Lochie Chittock

Champion of Champions - Peter Sewell

The House that came out on top of the fight was Burns. Gilray will claim some excuses (as usual), Ross won’t know what to say and Balmacewen don’t say anything because they are used to losing. But Athletics was the real winner on the day.
