At McGlashan, we recognise the essential role that food and nutrition play in supporting our students' overall wellbeing, academic success, and physical health. We are dedicated to promoting healthy eating habits and providing students with the knowledge they need to make informed, nutritious choices that contribute to a balanced lifestyle.

Promoting Healthy Eating Habits

We encourage our students to adopt a balanced, nutritious diet, based on the principles outlined by the Ministry of Health’s Eating and Activity Guidelines for New Zealand. This includes:

  • Eating a variety of vegetables and fruits every day

  • Choosing whole grains and high-fibre foods

  • Incorporating lean protein sources such as fish, chicken, eggs, legumes, and nuts

  • Limiting foods high in sugar, salt, and saturated fats

  • Staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water

Healthy Lunchboxes

A nutritious lunch is key to keeping students focused, energised, and ready for the school day. We recommend packing lunchboxes that include:

  • Fresh fruit or vegetables for a healthy snack

  • A wholegrain sandwich, wrap, or salad to provide a balanced main meal

  • Diary products such as yoghurt or cheese for calcium

  • Water as the main drink, keeping hydration levels up

School Canteen Options

Our college canteen provides a variety of healthy meal and snack options to support good nutrition throughout the day. We aim to offer foods that align with nutritional guidelines, ensuring that students have access to meals that nourish both their minds and bodies.

Nutrition Education

As part of our health and physical education curriculum, students learn the importance of maintaining a balanced diet for long-term health. They also explore:

  • How to read and understand food labels

  • Skills for meal planning and food preparation

These lessons are brought to life through practical activities such as cooking classes and workshops, helping students develop healthy habits that will last a lifetime.

Special Dietary Requirements

We understand that some students have specific dietary needs due to allergies, medical conditions, or cultural preferences. Our school works closely with students and their whānau to ensure these needs are met safely and respectfully, creating a supportive environment for all.

Encouraging Whānau Involvement

We invite whānau to join us in supporting students’ nutritional needs. By reinforcing the importance of balanced meals at home and encouraging healthy choices, we can work together to establish lasting habits that benefit our students throughout their lives.
