Learn strategies to prevent violence and ensure safety for all.
At McGlashan, we are dedicated to providing a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment where every student can flourish. Our approach to safety and violence prevention is built on a foundation of mutual respect, open communication, and proactive care for both our students and their whānau.

Creating a Culture of Respect
We believe in fostering a culture where manaakitanga (hospitality, kindness) and inclusion are at the core of everything we do. We encourage students to show respect for themselves, their peers, and our school community. By leading with positive role models and reinforcing respectful behaviours, we work to prevent bullying, harassment, and all forms of violence.
Prevention Programmes and Initiatives
At McGlashan, we integrate a range of evidence-based programmes to promote safety and prevent violence within our school. These include:
Restorative Practices
Encouraging open conversations to resolve conflicts and rebuild trust, creating a strong sense of community.
Digital Citizenship Education
Helping students navigate the digital world safely, addressing cyberbullying, and promoting responsible online behaviour.
Peer Support Programmes
Senior students support and mentor younger students, fostering connections and providing guidance during key stages of their journey.
Need more help?
We take all concerns seriously, whether they relate to physical, emotional, or online issues. Students are encouraged to speak up and report any incidents, knowing they will be supported by our dedicated pastoral care team. Every situation is approached with sensitivity and confidentiality, ensuring that all students feel heard and valued.
Working with Whānau and the Wider Community
We recognise that safety extends beyond our school grounds. We actively collaborate with whānau, local organisations, and agencies like Oranga Tamariki and the New Zealand Police to create a comprehensive support network. Together, we address issues of violence and equip our students with the tools they need to manage challenges both in and outside the school environment.
Support Services Available
Students can access a range of support services to help them thrive:
-
Counselling Services: On-site support for emotional wellbeing and mental health.
-
Wellbeing Resources: Tailored resources and workshops designed to help students manage stress, resolve conflicts, and build healthy relationships.
Taking Action Together
At McGlashan, we believe in working together with students, staff, whānau, and the wider community to uphold a safe and caring environment. Violence in any form is not tolerated, and through collaboration, we are committed to preventing it and ensuring all students feel safe and supported.
