Support your mental health through awareness, connection, and self-care.

Mental Health and Wellbeing at John McGlashan College

At John McGlashan College, we recognise that a strong foundation in mental health and wellbeing is essential for our students to thrive academically, socially, and personally. Adolescence is a time of significant change, and we are committed to fostering a supportive environment where every student feels valued, connected, and equipped to navigate life’s challenges.

Supporting Student Wellbeing

We understand the pressures young people face, from academic expectations to personal and social challenges. Our approach to mental health focuses on:

  • Fostering Connection – Encouraging strong relationships, open communication, and a sense of belonging within the John McGlashan community

  • Building Resilience – Providing students with strategies to manage stress, adapt to change, and approach challenges with confidence

  • Encouraging Self-Care – Promoting healthy habits such as regular exercise, balanced nutrition, adequate sleep, and mindfulness practices

On-Site Support Services

Our dedicated pastoral care team is here to guide and support students facing mental health challenges. Available services include:

  • Counselling Services – Confidential, one-on-one support to help students navigate personal, emotional, or academic concerns

  • Pastoral Care Team – Teachers, form teachers and staff are trained to provide guidance, support, and referrals as needed

  • Peer Mentoring – Senior students offering encouragement and a listening ear to younger students, fostering a culture of support and understanding

Mental Health Education

Mental health education is embedded in our curriculum to equip students with the knowledge and skills to manage their wellbeing. Key topics include:

  • Recognising signs of stress, anxiety, and depression

  • Developing emotional regulation and healthy coping mechanisms

  • Encouraging help-seeking behaviour and reducing the stigma around mental health

Community Partnerships

We collaborate with organisations such as Life Matters Suicide Trust. We encourage using Youthline, 1737 Need to Talk?, and the Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand to provide additional resources for students and their whānau.

Recognising When to Seek Help

Asking for help is a sign of strength. We encourage students who feel overwhelmed, anxious, or isolated to reach out to a trusted adult, teacher, or a member of the pastoral care team.

For Whānau

Parents and caregivers play a vital role in supporting their son’s mental health. We provide resources and workshops to help whānau understand the challenges young people face and how to offer effective support.
